Each cast member is trained in an art resembling one of 5 venemous creatures (Scorpion, Snake, Centipede, Gecko, Toad) with the 6th cast member being trained in all 5. One of the greatest classic kung-fu movies of all time and arguable Kurosawa’s best work. Some Samurai of the time were down on their luck (homeless) and willing to do anything for a meal. A village under attack by bandits recruits a group of seven such Samurai warriors and asks them to help defend their village. The movie is about the Samurai teaching the village how to fight and culminates in a massive battle between a village and almost 50 attacking bandits. The acting is superb, the emotions run high and Kurosawa keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

Based on a Pentalogy (yes, that’s 5 books) written by Wang Dulu, this movie covers mostly the 4th book. Critically acclaimed to cross international borders with it’s amazing character development, intricate plot, martial arts ideals, stunning special effects and quicker-than-the-eye fighting scenes, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon set a new standard for martial arts movies. Telling Zhang Ziyi (the lead female character and an amazing martial artist) to get back in the kitchen would likely cost you 50 punches to the “bags”. Be ready for subtitles, ‘cuz turning on the English track is like watching…uh…like watching a kung fu movie in English.

Tarantino expertly uses every camera angle and a plethora of special effects to deliver a better-than-real visual experience that gives this blood-and-guts thriller an artistic feel you’ll appreciate at the end. Did I mention is has Uma Thurman in it?
(“Kill bill vol. 2″ brings closure to the set, but hey…we had to choose one movie. Say “Five-Point-Palm Exploding Heart Technique” 5 times fast.)

He’ll never be the original, but the modern film-making and larger budget bring the entertainment value just a hair above the original Fist of Fury. (The ghost of Bruce Lee is probably going to strike me down for writing that) The Yuen Brothers are known for amazing action choreography, and they totally deliver on this one. (Casting Jet Li may have helped them a little too.)

The authors of these works claim that by changing our thoughts we can change our lives. Yes, while positive thinking is an important step in creating a successful life, one in which you attain more, accomplish more and feel better while doing it, it is not the only prerequisite to having a completely fulfilling and satisfying life. These self-help movies must have sequels, and the books, epilogues. That final chapter, if you will, is called ‘Positive Action’. Mere thoughts will not bring you the change in life that you seek. Imagine you’re sitting on a rock over- looking the ocean, gazing at the water and boats passing by, thinking about your love life, your job, your children, your weight issues or your medical problems, and affirming your need to change or improve certain aspects. Will your problems improve or disappear as a result of all those positive thoughts? NO, NO, NO! For that to occur, that thought must prompt you to take action. The following five steps outline how you can advance from simple believing or reflecting on positive thoughts to undertaking concrete and positive actions. Positive Action #1: Write down your thoughts Writing down your thoughts is the first step toward manifesting your ideas, dreams or goals. It is an ACTION and, perhaps, one of the hardest steps for people to take as they begin to move towards realizing their goals. Use the acronym ‘SMART’ to help describe your goal or idea. S- Specific M- Measurable A-Attainable R- Realistic T-Timely How do I use SMART? Be very SPECIFIC as you describe your objective. Instead of writing “Lose weight”, write “Lose 20 pounds in six months, by X date”. Make sure your goal can be MEASURED. In this same example, you can measure success by how much weight you lose each week. Is your goal ATTAINABLE and REALISTIC? Yes, losing 20 pounds in six months equates to losing about a pound a week. However, setting a goal of losing 50 pounds in four weeks is NOT realistic, and therefore is subject to failure. This same goal of losing 20 pounds is TIMELY if you are overweight, have health issues and your doctor has told you to lose weight; it is probably not be timely if your height and weight are proportional and you are in excellent health. Using SMART helps you to clearly envision your goal, and gives you a blueprint for moving forward. So, write down your goals and thoughts. This positive action is a step in the right direction. BE SMART! Positive Action #2: Share your ideas, goals and thoughts with someone else Once you’ve documented your goal using the SMART guidelines, Positive Action #2 is to tell someone about it. This takes effort but the results are powerful. You see, when you share, it makes you accountable. In addition to sharing verbally, you will also want to take physical action as follow through to what you’ve told people in order to demonstrate that you are taking steps toward reaching your goal. The more people you share your goal with, the better. Enlist the help and support of friends and family alike. Ask them to occasionally check in on you, to make sure you’re working toward meeting your objective. Success is all but guaranteed when you take this action. Going to work will be difficult when you know your closest friend is going to ask you how things are going and you have no update. If you can’t answer or you are unable to give your spouse, in-law or even your children an update on your progress, you will be disappointing more than just yourself. Most of us do what is necessary to avoid letting others down. So, TELL, TELL, TELL! Positive Action #3: Post visual reminders around the house For Positive Action #3, write your thoughts and goals on index cards or sticky notes and post them in obvious locations around your house. This will give you visible reminders of what it is you are trying to accomplish. Seeing these reminders around the house will help keep you focused on your goals. What happens if you lapse? You may decide to remove that little slip of paper, that small symbol of your larger objective, because you’re feeling it is no longer important enough to sit on your dresser or hang on your refrigerator. But think: the conscious effort on your part of taking it down represents defeat. LEAVE IT THERE! Leave that slip of paper up and read it again and again! There will always be days when we fall off the horse, when all we want is to stay in bed and hide under the covers. Don’t! Get back on that horse and ride. Ride until you have reached the finish line. It’s ok to take a break and allow yourself an occasional rest, but always get back on and ride. If you SEE IT, you will DO IT! Positive Action #4: Write yourself a letter Imagine you are at the end of your journey and have reached your goal. Write yourself a letter in which you describe exactly what ‘the end’ looks like, what it feels like and everything you went through to arrive at your goal. As an example, if my goal was to save enough money to buy a house, I would write a letter to myself that goes something like this, Dear Coach Ty, I had to take a moment to tell you how overwhelmed with emotion I am at this very moment. I’m sitting in the doorway of my brand new home. I wish you were here to see me. It is such a beautiful house. It’s the size, style and price that I was looking for. Now my family can grow and enjoy each other here. My kids now have a backyard they can play in without me being worried about where they are. They both have their own rooms now, and can invite friends over to play. I wish you were here to see their faces when I showed them around; they both looked so happy and my heart was full of happiness to have them look at me and my wife and tell us thank you. My wife can now have her own little office to manage the charity work she’s involved in. She has enough space to do the laundry; I used to hate seeing her go up and down the stairs to the laundry room in our old apartment building. She loves the kitchen and is happy we finally have our own bathroom. Of course she would have traded everything just to have that walk in closet she always dreamed of! We now have enough space where we can both spend plenty of time together and have much- needed (and well-deserved) time alone. I have space for my office too, and enough extra space to entertain and have friends over. The two-car garage is perfect because our next goal is to buy a second car. I cannot forget to mention that I finally have a MAN ROOM…yes, a men-only space with all types of man toys: sports stuff, video games, a pool table and a full bar. WOW, when I look back at what it took to get here, I’m just so grateful that I always maintained a positive attitude and took the steps needed to see to it that this dream was realized for both me and my family. Again, this is one of the happiest days of my life, and although it wasn’t an easy road to travel, every hurdle was worth the trouble of what I’m feeling right now! Acknowledge the hardships it took to achieve that goal! This exercise really works – it is positive action. And, when that inevitable lapse occurs, just pull out this letter and re-read it! It is sure to help you get back up on that horse and continue riding. Positive Action #5: Review your objectives weekly Review your letter and outline all the steps you will need to take in order to arrive at the finish line and make your goal a reality. Plan how you will accomplish each step from week to week. Every Sunday, plan your task(s) for the upcoming week to ensure you are one step closer at the end of that week. If necessary, pull yourself over to the side of the road while on this journey. Refuel and check your map to make sure you are traveling in the right direction. You may need to reassess your chosen route and change course slightly. That’s o.k. Just look for alternate routes that get you to the same finish line. Remember, detours and short cuts will not work. The best road to success is sometimes the one that looks the bumpiest! And, as you see concrete results, you will be convinced that this course of action works, as even the smallest indicator of success or achievement will keep you on track. When you consistently engage in positive thinking and also apply these five action steps, two things will happen: You will see your dreams and goals become reality, and you will see a shift in your life unlike any other. Not only will you claim these guiding principles as your own, but you will also begin to advocate this practice to others. Those around you will have observed how you’ve changed and grown just by seeing you smile more and noticing how you walk with a new bounce in your step. Your enthusiasm will be apparent and infectious. Friends and family will know what you’ve achieved and want to enjoy similar success. By now you’d think we’d have this love thing pretty well defined. Shakespeare seemed to have the emotion, in all its many forms, nailed down nearly five hundred years ago. We know that love can be romantic, passionate, and lustful, the way it is when you’ve fallen for someone new. Love can be protective and patient, as it is between a parent and a child. Love can be loyal and true, dependable and kind, the way it is between close friends. After thousands of years as a species there shouldn’t any surprises left inside the heart of mankind, but I think Pixar has discovered something Shakespeare missed. In Toy Story 3, a story that’s been decades in the making finally comes to completion, and culminates not in a fight scene or a stirring speech, but in what feels like a new kind of love. The Toy Story franchise ends in a few perfect moments, a final goodbye, a last expression of that new, heart-wrenching feeling. What do I call this lump in my throat? Can we really love an inanimate object as truly as Andy seems to love Woody? Can an inanimate object love us back? Toy Story 3 makes a rather convincing case for the affirmative. Does it really matter? It feels like it does. It matters because it isn’t really the toy we love, but what it represents. Toy Story 3 begins not in Andy’s room but inside Andy’s imagination. Woody’s in a race to save the day, and it’s as if he’s been launched straight into the wild west. There’s a train robbery, a desert cliff, and a race against time. For a few beautiful moments, we see what Andy sees when he plays with Woody, the worlds his cowboy pal unlocks, and the places that takes him. And it’s imagination that Pixar loves, and imagination that we’ve fallen so desperately in love with over the course of these films. Yet it’s even more than that here. Toy Story 3 takes it even further, it’s a movie in love with life, and the memories of life, and all the heartaches, and changes, and beautiful, wonderful, happy times that happen and the ways in which they’ll never be forgotten. Happiness can’t last forever, if it did, it wouldn’t seem as happy. Andy has grown up and in the process he’s outgrown his toys. Some of them have been lost along the way and the few toys that remain in his all but forgotten toy box are no longer brought out for play. They understand. So as Andy prepares to leave home for college the toys that remain prepare for a retirement to the attic, hoping for a new life some day when they’ll play with Andy’s kids. There’s something effortlessly beautiful in that notion. Woody is determined to be there for Andy, even if being there for him means waiting, and waiting, for decades in an attic. He’ll do it, happily, and never ask for anything in return. Of course things don’t go as planned and the few toys Andy has left are accidentally donated to a daycare center. Director Lee Unkrich and his team use it as an opportunity to go creatively and wonderfully nuts. The daycare center presents a whole host of opportunities for new toys and new ideas. Dozens and dozens of new characters are introduced and handled perfectly. Chief among them is Lotso, a plush, huggable bear who smells like strawberries and seems to be in charge. His lieutenant is a Ken doll, who denies that he’s a toy for girls and seems to be unaware that he was only made as a complement to Barbie. Wherever Ken goes he’s the star in his own movie, and in the process the most infamously neutered toy of all time becomes Pixar’s funniest character since Mike Wazowski. In the previous two movies we saw what happened when the toys were separated from Andy: ever loyal they fought to get back. Toy Story 3 introduces something wholly new into the equation though and lets them wonder whether they should go back, when there’s no one to go back to. Now much depleted in numbers, Andy’s toys seem more developed than ever before. Woody’s the movie’s star, but you’ll get to know characters like Hamm and Mrs. Potato Head better than you ever have before. That seems wholly appropriate, in a movie that feels as more like a loving goodbye to something special and magical, than just another new adventure. What I’m getting at here is that the story of Andy’s toys is as heartfelt and wonderful as ever. Because Pixar has let these characters age, and let their world age, it feels like we’re connected to them, like they’ve been an intimate part of our lives all along. In Toy Story 3 we see them in what appears to be their twilight, and it’s beautiful. It’s too beautiful, too much to encompass in any one film review. We need new words for these emotions, this new kind of love. It’s always been there of course, but it’s never been as clearly defined, as succinctly expressed as it was for a couple of hours in a darkened theater tonight, while a group of people sat together and tried not to look like they were going to cry over the depiction of a few pieces of plastic. As a rule of thumb any sequel must be bigger than the last one. In hollywood bigger usually means more stunts, grander stakes, and even more epic locations. For Toy Story bigger has always meant bigger feelings. I walked out of Toy Story 3 feeling as if my heart was too full, as if at any moment it would burst. Pixar has already given us two utterly perfect Toy Story movies, yet this may be the best one yet. I love you Buzz. I love you Woody. You’re more than plastic, to me.

Mahesh Babu is cool. Puri Jagannath is original, creative and daringly different. When such a director gets the authentic acting support from his cool lead actor you can expect fire works on the screen. That’s what happens in Pokiri. Mahesh Babu, Shayaji Shinde, Asish Vidyarthi and Prakash Raj all give sterling performances to the shouts of ‘action’ and ‘cut’ of Puri Jagannath for Pokiri. The result is that we have a reasonably hit movie even in the face of stiff competition from other strategically released action movies this summer. Mahesh Babu’s character is that of a professional killer who speaks softly, directly and acts swiftly. Mahesh Babu dons the role with practiced ease. Shayaji Shinde, Prakash Raj and Asish Vidyarthi are seasoned actors who understand the nuances of acting and the demands of the roles pretty well. While Asish Vidyarthi and Prakash Raj are at their menacing best, Shayaji Shinde shines as a media bashing sincere police officer. Puri has given a lot of footage and clarity to their characters in Pokiri to extract the best from them. Here is a sample of Puri’s directorial genius. It’s a fight scene. Mahesh Babu lands just one solid punch on the face of Prakash Raj. The impact is so profound that Prakash Raj becomes totally disoriented as well as loses his sense of hearing for a brief moment and hears nothing but a continuous high-pitched buzzing sound at a low volume. The auteur shows this by switching off the sound track and the audience only hears the same buzzing sound that Prakash Raj supposedly hears; the camera all the while focusing on a panicky, clueless and disoriented Prakash Raj as he tries to figure out desperately what’s going on around him. The audience experiences the character’s sense of disorientation completely. That’s trend setting direction for you. We will definitely see the act getting repeated in movies to come. There is a scene in a station involving Ileana and Mahesh Babu where the later wants to eat the Upma from the former’s tiffin box that reflects the longing of a man to be close with the woman he loves. Watch out for that scene when you see the movie. Love and craving for togetherness finds expression on a platform via the tiffin box much like it happens in real life. If art reflects society then the violence in the movie is justified by the violence present in the society. The only thing that Puri can be accused of is the under utilization of ‘Ileana – the curvaceous’. Ileana should have been given more footage to add more meat to the movie with her depth of dulcet emoting. With just good songs the movie may face some competition from Bangaram, which have better songs. Yet at the end Pokiri would win and can hold it’s own for 100 days.
